The Art of Winging It...

Age Before Beauty?

You have one position to fill and two applicants: one older, the other young. How do you make the decision as to whom to hire? The older person seems perfect; he’s experienced in this work. He knows what he’s up against and won’t need hand-holding. He’s distinguished and will not embarrass you in front of your clients.

But, you know, older people are set in their ways. He may resist your business processes with the usual, "Well I’ve been doing this for 25 years and I’ve never seen anybody do it like that before." And he might think computers are okay for kids and games but he’s gotten along just fine without one. His salary requirements are in the top range, so if he’s not highly productive, you will lose money. If he is, there isn’t much room to give him a raise.

So what about the younger guy? He’s hungry and eager to prove himself. He’ll take what you offer just for the opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities. He’ll crave overtime and soak up information like a sponge. He was born with a silver computer in his mouth and, since this is his first real job, he’ll be very loyal. He can grow with the company and will be very adaptable. Seems the younger guy is the right one for the job.

But you know, he’ll need quite a bit of training and will make lots of mistakes. Your clients will feel saddled with someone still wet behind the ears. And young people like to party and actually have a life. He might work for a year then, just as he’s becoming productive, leave you for another dollar an hour.

I often find myself in such a quandary and tend to rely on 3 main factors. One, hire the person, not the resume. Skills can be learned, but a person’s character and attitude are what you ultimately rely upon. Two, hire the person who’s committed to your vision and goals, regardless of age. Three, hire the person with the fire in his belly. Just because a person is young doesn’t mean he’s assertive. An older person can have a fire down there, even if it’s mixed with Metamucil.

So choose wisely and be glad you’re not choosing between a man and woman because, you know, that’s a whole different quandary!
