Boyd Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning has been a home-based Nokesville business since January 1995. Owned by its President Chuck Boyd, Boyd Plumbing is a Class A contractor licensed in general contracting, plumbing, mechanical systems, sprinkler systems, refrigeration, gas-fitting, and septic systems in Virginia, Maryland and Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC).

"Not many people have that many licensed capabilities," Chuck said modestly.

The bulk of Boyd’s work is commercial and includes restaurants, tenant fit-outs and remodeling, and he specializes in design-build work. Because of the building boom in this general area, his work is now closer to home, in Fauquier, Loudoun and Prince William Counties.

Chuck began working as a plumber’s apprentice after high school. He attended an adult education course at Northwestern High School in Maryland to obtain certification from WSSC. He earned Certified Master Plumber status in Virginia in1985 and eventually became the Quality Control and Safety Officer for a contractor working at Vint Hill Farms Station. He was a senior vice president for a general contracting firm before he started his own business. Boyd currently has three employees, excluding Chuck and his wife, Susan.

Susan is Secretary-Treasurer for the business, carrying out the full range of administrative and financial duties. They moved to Nokesville in 1983 and have two children.

Chuck and Susan agree that, for them, the best part of having a home-based business is the flexibility and time allowed with the family. Now, they’re with their children more.

"Our business has been very good," said Chuck. "We’re steadily growing....We’re always looking for good employees."
