LESSONS LEARNED
RICK GEORGE, PAVECO
Rick George, owner of PAVECO Asphalt Paving and Seal Coating, has been in business for fifteen years. At aged thirteen, he began laying asphalt for the family business which had been in existence in Texas since the 1950s. By seventeen, he was managing it but struck out on his own at 22.
As a Class A licensed contractor, Rick and his crew can work throughout the state, but stay very busy in Prince William, Loudoun and Fairfax Counties. Each of the past twelve years has been better then the previous. In fifteen years, he and his family have moved into three houses, each nicer then the last.
Rick knows there are several reasons for his success, but he attributes it first and foremost to his faith.
"God has blessed my business," Rick says, and he sums up the key to his success in one sentence. "I credit my good work to the Lord."
He knows what tools he’s been given to grow his company, which currently has six employees. First, he dedicates his business to God. He tells the story of a friend who remarked that he was doing so well, he must have hit the lottery.
"I did," Rick replied. "His name is Jesus."
Rick advises honesty and truthfulness in whatever you do. He has established a good reputation among his clients and within the paving community for his trustworthiness.
Give something away; it always comes back. Rick tries to make sure he has more than enough supply to complete a job. That way, he can assure the work is well done and his good reputation is maintained.
"It all comes back to you when you reap what you sow," he states, summarizing the lessons he’s learned.
Rick George and his family moved from Manassas to Nokesville three years ago. His wife Shella handles most of the paperwork and calls for PAVECO. They have three children: Racquel, 16; Jessica, 12; and Joshua, 9.
